INJURY MANAGEMENT

Activities of Daily Living Assessments

Supporting independence, safety and confidence in everyday life.

What is an Activities of Daily Living Assessment?

An Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Assessment measures an individual’s functional ability to safely perform everyday tasks. This includes self‑care activities, domestic tasks and general community mobility.

The focus of an ADL is to support greater independence, while maintaining safety and considering the impact of an injury or illness on day‑to‑day function.

Who conducts the assessment?

All ADLs are completed by a registered occupational therapist with experience in functional assessment and rehabilitation.

How the assessment works

The assessment considers how an individual completes everyday activities in their usual environments, such as the home, workplace or community.

Following the assessment, recommendations may include:

  • Practical education and strategies to support safer and more independent task completion
  • Assistive equipment or aids to reduce risk and improve function
  • Home or workplace modifications where appropriate
  • Temporary services to support daily living, such as garden maintenance or assistance with self‑care

Why it matters

An ADL provides clear, practical recommendations that support independence and safety in everyday life.

ADLs can benefit injured workers by:

  • Providing on‑site education and strategies to enhance independence
  • Identifying cost‑effective and practical solutions to functional challenges
  • Recommending assistive equipment, modifications and support services
  • Advising on relevant scheme funding entitlements
  • Facilitating follow‑up support for prescribed equipment where required
  • Delivering a comprehensive report outlining findings and recommendations

Where temporary supports are recommended, Konekt can also provide a Return to Self‑Management Plan. This ensures services are time‑limited and focused on building independence, with the goal of safely reducing support as the individual’s capacity improves.
